Postoperative care 

Following any surgical procedure, older adults should be mindful of any postoperative pain or symptoms that might indicate other issues after their hospital stay.

Postoperative care is the care one receives after a surgical procedure. The type of postoperative care one needs depend on the type of surgery they had, as well as their health history. It often includes pain management and wound care. Postoperative care begins immediately after surgery.

Making sure that the individual can move around by sitting up, moving to a chair, standing and exercising is important, or at the very least, optimize nutritional intake.

After surgery, older adults may have trouble sleeping, struggle to regain strength, take longer to return to normal behaviour, and need relaxation exercises and other support.

It is important to have a caregiver with the patient to help with recovery.
